I write scary stories for a living and nothing is more horrific than what is happening all over the world and right here in America.

A few facts about me: I was once a teenage runaway who knows a thing or two about being unhoused and being so hungry... cardboard looks good. I worked the overnight shift for a homeless shelter for women and children in my early twenties while I was putting myself through college. Some of the reasons they arrived at my door might surprise you. I didn't have a lot of resources when I became a mom.

I worked full-time, but was not paid enough to cover anything extra, and was deeply grateful to have the temporary assistance of WIC, so I could afford fresh vegetables and dairy products while I was pregnant.

Food insecurity affects millions of individuals and families around the world. This issue is not just a statistic; it involves real people facing hunger daily. Economic downturns, natural disasters, and events like government shutdowns amplify this problem. As someone who has lived this painful experience, I am determined to make a difference. Therefore, from November 1 to December 1, 2025, I will donate 50% of my book profits to a local food bank. This initiative aims to help bridge the gap for those affected by economic hardships and support individuals in need. If I can do more, I certainly will.

Understanding Food Insecurity

Food insecurity means not having reliable access to enough nutritious food. This situation can manifest in various forms, from skipping meals to relying heavily on food banks. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 38 million Americans—about 10.5% of the population—are food insecure. This percentage has risen significantly over the past few years, particularly due to challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The effects of food insecurity extend beyond hunger. It affects health, mental well-being, educational achievements, and overall quality of life. Children in food-insecure households, for example, are 1.5 times more likely to experience developmental delays. Adults may face increased stress levels, leading to chronic conditions such as obesity and diabetes.

The Impact of Government Shutdowns

Government shutdowns worsen food insecurity, especially for low-income families who rely on federal aid. When these programs are halted, many individuals lose vital resources necessary for buying food. This situation creates an urgent demand for local food banks and community organizations that strive to fill the gaps, but they are already at maximum output.

During the last government shutdown in 2018-2019, food banks experienced up to a 30% increase in demand. Families that had previously managed to provide food for their children found themselves suddenly dependent on food assistance. This stark reality underscores the fragility of food security for many and highlights the urgent need for community support.

My Personal Journey

My journey into writing began as a personal outlet, but it has grown into something more significant—an opportunity for advocacy. I have witnessed the struggles of those in my community, and feel a sense of responsibility to raise awareness and inspire others.

By donating 50% of my profits to a local food bank, I aim not only to contribute financially, but also wish to spark a conversation about food insecurity. I hope this initiative encourages others to think about how they can make a difference. If you happen to be a millionaire or a billionaire and you're reading this, slide into my DMs. Llet's talk about your legacy.

How You Can Help

Addressing food insecurity requires a collective effort. Here are some actionable ways to contribute to this pressing issue:

  • Support Local Food Banks: Donate non-perishable items or volunteer your time. For instance, a single can of soup can help feed a family of four with just a few meals.

  • Advocate for Change: Connect with local representatives to push for policies that protect food assistance programs during government shutdowns. Do not make this a partisan issue. Make it a human one, because it is.

  • Raise Awareness: Share information on social media or within your groups about food insecurity and local food banks.

  • Participate in Community Events: Join or create fundraising activities. For example, hosting a bake sale can turn a small effort into funds for local food support.

The Role of Community

The community plays a crucial role in tackling food insecurity. When individuals unite to help each other, they create a safety net for those in need. Local food banks depend on community donations to keep their shelves stocked and provide essential services.

By pledging to donate a portion of my book profits, I hope to inspire others to consider their role in supporting their communities. Whether through giving, volunteering, or advocating, every action counts.

Looking Ahead

I am filled with optimism that this current crisis will help people understand that we are better together and to deeply consider who benefits from our pain, fear and division. Okay, I am off the soapbox. Together, we can change the lives of those facing food insecurity. My pledge to donate 50% of my November profits is part of a larger movement towards a fairer society.

I encourage you to think about how you can help. Whether through donations to local food banks, volunteering, or advocacy, your contributions matter.

Final Thoughts

Food insecurity is a critical issue that needs immediate attention. By committing to donate half of my book profits to a local food bank, I aim to contribute to the fight against this problem. I invite you to join me in this effort and seek ways to support your local community. Together, we can strive for a future where everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.

Let’s unite for the common good, let's vote for positive change, let's use our voices to make a difference for those who are struggling. Your support can help ensure that no one in our community goes hungry, especially during challenging periods like government shutdowns. Thank you for considering this significant cause and for your dedication to creating a positive impact however you can. https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank
