Recently a wise friend told me to look inward for focus. What is important to you? Go there.
I listened, perhaps so closely that I am yearning for more space and more time. If you’re a man, please stop reading now. Okay, all right…but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
If you are a woman, this post is for you.
The Great American Novelist is by default a caucasian, relatively well-off and sorry to say is also historically a man. Gradually this is changing, but I also wonder... if everything we need to know is in a library, I say there's a giant hole in that bucket.
It’s clear to me that the number one reason more women don’t end up on that GAN list is because when they are done with the one hundred and one things they must do to keep the dust bunnies at bay, the only choice left is to sleep. Does a tree fall in the forest if no one hears it?
If I had one wish for you, wonder woman, career woman, underserved and quite unappreciated for all the amazing things you do woman…this year and into the next, it would be the gift of time.
No, not stolen time waiting in the car at the dentist, or moments in-between someone else’s time. Time for you alone. I am not omniscient, or I would give it to you right now. Recently I decided to do one, tiny thing for myself.
Actually two. I am attending, Unstoppable: A Virtual Event on December 11th
Then I’m taking a few days away from everyone and the infinite laundry to write. Not to tweet, not to zoom, but to write. It is my Christmas gift to myself. I realize that not everyone can do this, but if you know that writer or creative... why not give them this gift?
If you are all in good health, donate your spare bedroom, vacation house or office for a few days to someone you know and go watch their children, at their house. Not kidding.
The writer who could change the world, the person who could inspire a movement is wishing right now that they had the space to think, breathe and create.
In the meantime ladies and gents, get yourself and a cool friend a ticket for Unstoppable and support my incredible friends at KORE Women and The Red Bra Project on their quest to inspire and elevate women and men. We can co-create a new, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and empowered year. Together is so much better. I can’t wait and hope you come too.
P.S. I am back in the traditional query game with a mystery novel and according to my Betas is fab-u-lous, but it needs a proper home. If you know of a literary agent open to the mystery and upmarket/women’s fiction genres, for the love of Ruth Ware…
Would you send them my way?
Thank you for walking with me this year on my blog, IRL, #BOOKEM (watch our 26th show this Wednesday @ 1:45 p.m. on YouTube.) I am so grateful for all the ways that we connect with each other.
Enjoy Thanksgiving, stay safe and remember to count your blessings. I will be missing an amazing young woman in Atlanta and my entire family up north. We were so sad to cancel our flights due to the virus, but hope to see everybody this coming summer. Sending love and good vibes your way.
